Install Java plugin version 1.5 CASK FAQ

What is the matter?
You need the Java version 1.5 plugin for the virtual microscope in CASK.

What should I do?

  1. Be sure that Java does not run: close any browser-windows and programs that use Java.

A browser is i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.

  2. Deinstall any newer versions of Java, e.g. Java 1.6.

Click: START > Settings > Control Panel > Add or remove Programs. Remove all entries containing "Java (TM) ...6..." (= Java version 6)

  3. Note: other programs sometimes are automatically co-installed. Uncheck them if you do not want them. (Read more here)

Be warned: in the download process (the next step), free extra programs are sometimes offered, like a Yahoo or Google toolbar. If you do not want them to be automatically co-installed, you must unselect (=remove the tick) them in the appropriate checkbox.

  4. DOWNLOAD Java version 1.5
On the download page choose the option: "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 14"

You must have administrator rights on the computer to be allowed to install Java.

On the download page choose the option: "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 14".

Follow the steps of the install procedure as indicated.

  5. Often it is necessary to close all browser-windows after the download/install and restart the browser, before Java will work. Occassionally, you might even need to restart the computer.
