Accessing security settings for web sites running from CD, hard disk or other local source Tech FAQ

What is the matter?
You run a web site from a CD, DVD, USB device or from a local hard disk on your computer. Something doesn't work, possibly due to a security setting, so you must adapt this setting. However, this is not as straightforward as for web sites running from the internet.

One always must adapt security settings in the appropriate security zone. CDs, DVDs, USB devices and local hard disks on your computer are in the so-called 'My Computer' security zone*. However, by default, the 'My Computer' zone is not displayed in the window 'Internet Options', so you cannot access it easily. Instead, the program running from CD or other local source will incorrectly be reported to run in the 'Internet Zone'.

Read below how to nevertheless access it.

* Applies to Internet Explorer on Windows

What should I do?
  1. To access the 'My Computer' zone requires adapting the Register. You should only do this if you know what you do, know the risks, and only do this after first having stored a back-up of the Register! When in doubt, consult an expert!

Read here (Microsoft help site) how to do this.

  2. After you have created access to the 'My Computer' zone, you can adapt security settings in this zone. Maybe you have been referred to this page from a page discussing how to set a specific security setting. Return to that page to continue with that setting.
