Disable 'Shut down wireless connection to save power' setting CASK FAQ

What is the matter?
You want to disable the setting 'Shut down wireless connection to save power'.

What should I do?

  1. Go to Control Panel.

    If you have Windows XP view: click Start > Control Panel
    If you have Classic view: click Start > Settings Control Panel



    Classic view:


  2. Click 'Network Connections'. A new window opens.

    In 'Control Panel', click 'Network Connections'.



    A new window, named 'Network Connections' will open.

  3. Click 'Wireless Network Connection'. A new window opens.

    In 'Network Connections', click 'Wireless Network Connection'.



    Either the window 'Wireless Network Connection Status' or 'Wireless Network Connection Properties will open.

  4. If the window 'Wireless Network Connection Status' has opened, click 'Properties'.
    If the window 'Wireless Network Connection Properties' already has opened, skip this step.




  5. Behind the name of the Wireless device, click button 'Configure'. A new window opens.

    In 'Wireless Network Connection Properties', on tab 'General', behind the name of the Wireless device, click button 'Configure'.



    A new window, for the wireless device, will open.

  6. Click tab 'Power Management'.

    You must have administrator rights on the computer to get the tab 'Power Management'.



  7. Unselect (remove tick) from 'Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power'.



  8. Click 'OK', also close the windows 'Wireless Network Connection Properties'and 'Network Connections'.



Background
This setting in Windows determines that if the power is low (e.g. a laptop running on a battery) the wireless transmitter is switched off toe save power, as a wireless transmitter consumes a large amount of power.
However, if the wireless connection is needed, this setting is undesirable as it may prevent a wireless connection.
